"CARRIE" (Kimberly Pierce, 2013)
I had a long rant all planned out about “Carrie,” KImberly Pierce’s utterly pointless remake/re-imagining of the 1976 Brian De Palma film … but why waste all that time and energy? Pierce’s film pales so much in comparison to the original. They didn’t even go back to the source novel. This film relies so heavily of the DePalma movie that Larwrence D. Cohen (writer of the original) gets a screenplay credit. And, we don’t even get the destruction of the town that was hinted at in that first teaser trailer. What a gyp. (1/5)

"MANIAC" (Franck Khalfoun, 2012)
And here it is, the remake of the 1980 cult horror film. “Maniac” looks good has a super cool score (and I mean … Super Cool!). But also, for me, it has one serious flaw. 90% of the movie is shot from Frank’s (Elijah Wood) POV. While that’s fun for effect, 80 minutes worth of it got to be a little tiresome. The director ends up resorting to showing Frank in mirrors and various other reflective surfaces so we can actually see Elijah Wood act.
[SPOILER ]I also found the plot device of “Mom was slutty and neglected me and that why I am crazy and can’t have normal relationships with women” to be a little too “I have seen this in a zillion movies already.”[END SPOILER]Overall, “Maniac” isn’t terrible as a horror movie and has some good things going for it. (3/5)

"HOUSE OF WAX" 3-D (Andre de Toth, 1953)
I have always loved “House of Wax,” the 1953 remake of “Mystery of the Wax Museum.” Now, thanks to the joys of home theater technology, we younger folks can now experience this wonderful movie in it’s original 3-D presentation. Warner Bros. really needs to commended for the time and care they took in putting this 3-D Blu-ray together. The movie looks spectacular and director Andre de Toth really uses the 3-D to enhance the depth and spookiness of the wax museum. There’s also some fun “in your face” bits thrown in for good measure. I love this movie and now love it even more in 3-D! (5/5)

"AFTER PORN ENDS" (Bryce Wagoner, 2010)
I have a weird interest in the “behind the scenes” aspect of the porn industry. So, “After Porn Ends” is a movie I have been keen on seeing for a while. It’s a fairly interesting documentary that focuses on straight porn and how various performers (male and female) ended up in and then out of the business. I did find it odd that, for a documentary about porn, the director went out of his way to not show any of the male performer’s cocks but had no problem showing most of the female performers totally naked. (3/5)

"EUROPA REPORT" (Sebastián Cordero, 2013)
I was really looking forward to this after lots of great buzz when the movie came out. Sadly, I was a little disappointed by “Europa Report.” Not that it’s a bad movie. It’s kept me interested the whole time but it does suffer from some pretty overused genre plotting. I also found a lot of the CGI to be a little cheap looking (and yes, I do realize this was a low budget movie). Maybe I was just ruined by seeing “Gravity” before seeing this.  (3/5)

"GRAVITY" (Alfonso Cuarón, 2013)
I was totally blown away by “Gravity.” After the stylishness of “Children of Men,” I was expecting great things from Cuarón. He doesn’t disappoint. It’s one of the most spectacular movies I have ever seen in terms of visual effects, cinematography and the use of music and sound. This is movie making as it should be. The plot is paper thin and does suffer a little from bad dialogue in regards to Stone’s (Sandra Bullock) back story. But, that can be easily overlooked in the overall scheme of things. And, who cares if the science isn’t exactly right. It’s all about the thrill of the journey … and what a journey it is. Make sure to see it in on the big screen in 3-D. (5/5)

"THIS IS THE END" (Evan Goldberg/Seth Rogen, 2013)
While there were a couple of funny moments, this is one of the more self-indulgent movies I have ever seen. … and it goes on for about 30 minutes more than it should have. Ugh. (1/5)
